Construction on the Gateway Trail in Pocahontas State Park started in September and was expected to be completed by October. The 2–4 miles of trails are fully optimized for adaptive-use cycles, such as those used by paraplegics and others with disabilities.
Eventually, there will be 22 miles of trails optimized for the larger wheelbase of adaptive-use cycles, with different loops that increase in difficulty, giving riders the chance to progress in skill level over time.
Once finished, the new adaptive-use trails will become a core part of the Richmond Regional Ride Center, a status given to the Richmond area by the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). Several locations were considered for the trail, but the group decided on Pocahontas State Park for a variety of reasons.
It’s easy to get to from Richmond and has facilities, including bathrooms and a camping area. It’s also a well-known mountain biking destination with more than 20 miles of dedicated mountain bike singletrack already in place. For more information, visit www.rvamore.org
